March Triathlon Series 2024 – Patrick’s Journey

On March 23rd, hundreds of triathletes will plunge into the frigid waters of Lopez Lake, cycle over the rolling hills of the Santa Lucia Range, and finish with a scenic lakeside run. March Triathlon Series (MTS) is the longest running collegiate triathlon on the West Coast, celebrating its 26th anniversary this year. What started as a Cal Poly student’s senior project has since evolved into an impressive race event that draws in triathletes from all backgrounds.

While MTS is a competitive collegiate race that serves as the West Coast Collegiate Triathlon Conference Championship, it also caters to triathletes of any ability and is open to all for registration. Both Sprint and Olympic distances are available at MTS, with course information available here. What makes MTS unique from other races is that it is fully organized and run by Cal Poly students, with 100% of the proceeds supporting the mission of the Cal Poly Triathlon Team: making triathlon accessible for all college students. GH Sports has proudly sponsored MTS since its inception and will continue by providing race bibs for this year’s event.

This year will be the third consecutive year I race MTS and hopefully the first year I am racing in good health! I feel especially confident going into this year’s race with my training and race equipment dialed in more than they ever have been before. Some GH Sports products I plan to use at MTS include the TYR Hurricane Wetsuit, GH Sports race belt, and Nathan lace locks. The course at MTS, although beautiful, is TOUGH. I would highly recommend practicing open water swimming in cold water (50-60F) to get used to the initial shock. In my experience, the bike segment has been the most difficult part of the race, so I would advise getting comfortable in the saddle and practicing riding on hilly terrain. GH Sports truly is a one-stop-shop for anything you’ll need before racing at March Triathlon Series. So what are you waiting for!? Go signup for MTS! See you at the start line.
